Creating a Lasting Legacy: Trustee Ian Chalmers Becomes Founder Patron of 224 Youth Zone

Youth Moves

224 are incredibly proud to share that Ian Chalmers, long-standing trustee of Youth Moves and 224, has become a Founder Patron of 224 Youth Zone, so that outstanding youth services can be provided at the new 224 Youth Zone in South Bristol.

Ian has chosen to make this generous donation in memory of his parents, Alderman Bernard Chalmers and Alma Chalmers, whose legacy of service and commitment to the South Bristol community continues to inspire him. His father served for many years as the local councillor for the Hartcliffe ward and was a passionate advocate for youth services across the city. His mother was also actively involved in the community, serving as treasurer and later honorary president of the Townswomen’s Guild.

“It seems fitting to mark their memory by becoming a Founder Patron for 224 Youth Zone, creating a lasting legacy rooted in the community they cared so deeply about,” Ian shared.

Ian has spent a lifetime championing youth development. As a young person, he was actively involved in The Scout Association and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, where he not only participated but went on to serve in leadership and trustee roles. He holds long-service awards from both organisations and currently chairs the trustee board at the very same scout group where he began his journey as a Cub Scout.

His deep commitment to young people and belief in the power of youth work led him to join the Youth Moves Board of Trustees in 2017, as he looked ahead to retirement from his career. Born in South Bristol, with strong ties to the area, Ian believes that 224 will be a transformational space for young people in South Bristol.

As a trustee, Ian played a pivotal role in setting the strategic direction for Youth Moves, including partnering with OnSide to develop 224 Youth Zone, a state-of-the-art facility that will transform opportunities for thousands of young people in South Bristol.

He continues to lead on Health & Safety for Youth Moves, bringing vital expertise from his professional background and voluntary work. He also oversees the transition project plan for the move to 224 Youth Zone, ensuring that the team are well-prepared to deliver high-quality services from day one.

His decision to become a Founder Patron not only marks his personal connection to the project but also underscores his lifelong commitment to ensuring all young people have access to safe, inspiring, and supportive spaces.

“My hope is that 224 Youth Zone will offer young people the same sense of purpose, adventure, and belonging that I found through youth services, and that it will continue to do so for generations to come.”

Ian’s first encounter with youth work came as a young person when he joined the Cub Scouts. Just a couple of weeks in, his parents agreed to let him attend his first Cub residential camp, an experience that sparked his lifelong connection to youth services. Today, he has come full circle, serving as Chair of the very same Scout group where his journey began.

Ian’s Reflections on Growing Up in South Bristol and 224’s Future

What was it like growing up in South Bristol?

“I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by caring and supportive parents, grandparents, and extended family. I have strong memories of walking to Bedminster Down Comprehensive School every day, my grandad taking me to see Bristol City play at Ashton, unfortunately sometimes being unsettled by the fights between young people from Hartcliffe, Knowle West, and Bedminster Down.’’

‘’It’s experiences like these that make me even more certain of the need for 224 Youth Zone. By providing a safe, welcoming space with positive role models and engaging activities, we can help reduce tensions between neighbourhoods, steer young people away from violence, and give them better pathways to succeed. A place like 224 has the power to break cycles, build understanding, and create a stronger, more connected South Bristol.”

‘’I also have fond memories of visiting the Youth Moves site (now based at The Park Centre) many years ago, back when it was a school, to take part in a five-a-side football competition on the tennis courts. Knowing that this space will soon move and be transformed into a world-class facility for young people makes it even more special. I can’t wait to see future generations making their own memories in this new space and to watch 224 bring young people from across South Bristol together, breaking down divides and opening new opportunities for all.”

If you were a young person, what would you like to try at 224?

‘’If I were a young person today, I think I’d be spoilt for choice at 224 Youth Zone. It will offer so many opportunities, from trying something completely new to simply having a safe space to relax and be yourself. I’d be tempted to give boxing a go, as it’s something I’ve never tried before. Whether I’d be any good at it, I don’t know, but if you don’t try, you’ll never find out.’’

224 Youth Zone is incredibly thankful for this generous gift. Having the belief and backing of one of our own Trustees speaks volumes, it’s a powerful demonstration of the trust, commitment, and shared vision behind this project.
